Assistant Professor, Eastern University

The Department of English at Eastern University invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of English, specializing in Medieval and Early Modern literature, beginning August, 2023. Candidates should have a PhD in British Literature or related discipline by August 2023 as well as expertise in British Medieval and Renaissance Literature, including Shakespeare. Candidates with additional expertise in areas such as European Literature before 1700 and Global Literature are especially encouraged to apply. Primary responsibilities include teaching 8 courses per year between semesters and summer; mentoring and advising students; and engaging in service to the department and university. Department responsibilities include teaching sections of a writing-intensive course in Eastern’s composition program. Eastern University is a Christian University of the liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies located in St. Davids, PA.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching will be the primary responsibility of this position. We are looking to build on existing strengths in the department and meet increasing student interest in the areas of British Literature before 1660, and upper-level courses in Shakespeare, Milton, and Medieval Writers. Additional responsibilities will include service to the department and university, mentoring and advising students, helping promote the department on campus, and engaging in the scholarly life of the department. Applicants should be willing to participate in the academic community of Eastern University and the faculty of friends within the College of Arts and Humanities. In addition, as a professor at a Christian liberal arts university, the successful applicant should be willing to support the integrated intellectual, moral, aesthetic, and spiritual formation of students.

Applicants should possess an PhD in British Literature or related discipline (or evidence of likely completion thereof prior to August 2023), evidence of outstanding teaching, and a record of publication appropriate to their experience in the field.
