Global Romeo and Juliet

This collection of essays seeks to explore the global reception of Romeo and Juliet, and it is especially interested in abstracts that concern film, stage, and scholarly treatments of the play in Eastern European countries, the Middle East, Russia, Ukraine, China, Japan, India, Africa, and South America. How is the tale of the star-crossed lovers repurposed, appropriated, and adapted in cultures outside of the Anglophone sphere? Possible topics for papers may include the following, but are by no means delimited by them:

  • Productions of Romeo and Juliet, Past and Present on Stage
  • Films, Adaptations, and Appropriations of Romeo and Juliet in the Global Arena
  • Issues of National Identity, Race, and Ethnicity in Romeo and Juliet
  • Feuds: Municipal, State, and National in Romeo and Juliet
  • The Problematics of Pedagogy, Romeo and Juliet, and the Undergraduate Classroom
  • Homosociality and Queer Affiliations in Romeo and Juliet
  • Romeo and Juliet in YouTube Videos, Fan Fiction, Cartoons, and Anime.
  • The Green World: Romeo and Juliet and Eco-criticism
  • The Digital, Textual, and Editorial History of Romeo and Juliet
