Fifth International Shakespeare Conference in Armenia

3 to 6 October 2024

The Armenian Shakespeare Association (ASA) is delighted to welcome scholars, students (PhD and postgraduate), theatre practitioners and the wider public to its 5th Conference in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia.

Call for Papers on the topic of

Shakespeare on power, abuse of power and autocracy: then, now, and tomorrow

We suggest the following panel discussions (other topics from panel leaders are
welcome):

  • Shakespeare and his contemporaries: the historical/political/socio-cultural context and subtexts
  • Shakespeare’s role in national revivals in the 18th and19th centuries: the historical settings of translations, performances in various languages, motifs of exile.
  • Shakespeare and the 20th century dictatorships: case studies may include
    performances and adaptations in cinema, ballet, opera, and theatre.
  • Looking into the future: the relevance of Shakespearean cannon for the new
    generation (early career scholars are particularly welcome to lead this panel of
    postgraduate students).

Applications for Panel leaders with a short biography to be sent before 30 April 2024
Participants: abstract of 250 words and biography of no more than100 words to be sent before 31 May 2024. Please email us to request application form: [email protected]

ASA will assist foreign participants with finding hotel accommodation, transfer from
Yerevan airport to their hotels, daily sightseeing tours, evening entertainment (including theatre, concerts, and restaurant bookings), food and wine tasting etc. Online participation is possible upon request (but not as much fun!)
