Shakespeare’s Farewell: A Second Look at the Bard’s Last Great Play

The Free Library of Philadelphia will present a talk via Zoom called “Shakespeare’s Farewell: A Second Look at the Bard’s Last Great Play” on Friday, September 13th at 11:00 A.M., by Dr. Jennifer Matisoff, of Arcadia University.

William Shakespeare was 47 and near the end of his career as a playwright, when he wrote The Tempest.  The experts agree that this was the most original play that Shakespeare ever wrote. As a man of his time, many of Shakespeare’s plays featured stories borrowed from others and the participation of a co-writer. In this case however, the man from Stratford conceived the plot himself and was the sole author of the play that followed. The Tempest is set on a remote island and governed by a man who uses magic both to enslave and to liberate others. This play offers important clues to the Bard’s attitude about his own life, his hopes for the world that would continue after his death and his understanding of our most intense relationships.  If it has been many years since you have seen or read The Tempest, our guest expert Dr. Jennifer Matisoff will bring it alive again for all of us.  Use the link below to register for a program that is destined to both educate and entertain.
