The Politics of Shakespeare

The Free Library of Philadelphia will present a talk for thoughtful older adults via Zoom called “The Politics of Shakespeare” on Friday, January 26th at 11:00 A.M., featuring Emerita Professor of Literature Dr. Rebecca Bushnell, of the University of Pennsylvania. She will explain that in a time when the British Crown did not tolerate ideas or personalities that it found offensive, how Shakespeare and his colleagues knew what they could and could not say. She will explore how the needs of the state impacted the history plays that the Bard wrote and speculate about how his greatest plays may have been different if Shakespeare had enjoyed the freedom of speech and expression that we take for granted today.
